Hearing Test and Hearing Aid Evaluation
The best way to determine if you have a hearing loss is to visit a licensed audiologist for a hearing test. Our audiologist will determine the type and severity of hearing loss you have and will identify appropriate treatment options and recommendations.

Otoscopy
A diagnostic hearing evaluation begins with otoscopic examination (physical examination of the outer ear, ear canal, and eardrum).

Hearing Test
Our audiologist will determine the specific tests to be done during the evaluation based on age, symptoms and medical history. These tests will determine the degree and type of hearing loss.

Pure-tone and bone conduction testing
Pure-tone testing determines the softest tones that a person can hear at different frequencies. Bone conduction testing is similar to pure-tone testing, however, a different type of headset is used to provide the audiologist with different information. A bone conduction test will help the audiologist determine whether the loss is in the nerve and therefore, likely permanent.

Speech testing
A speech reception threshold (SRT) test is used to determines the lowest level of sound a person can clearly identify words or speech. Word recognition score (WRS) is used to determine one's ability to understand words at a conversational or elevated speech level. WRS is debatably the most important test because it assesses how the brain processes speech and can set appropriate expectations for hearing aid benefits.

Tympanometry
Tympanometry is used to assess the movement of the eardrum.
Hearing Aid Evaluation
The evaluation and discussion of test results with the audiologist will last about 30 minutes in length. If the results indicate one could benefit from hearing devices the audiologist will discuss the options. We highly recommend that one bring a family member to the appointment. Hearing loss affects more than just the person themselves. It helps to have another supportive person at the appointment to help understand and process the information discussed.

If hearing aids are recommended, an in office-demonstration will occur. A pair of premium hearing aids will be placed on the ears so that one can experience hearing aids in a controlled environment. If satisfied with the quality of the hearing aids, one can walk out with them the same day.

The initial appointment is an opportunity to establish a relationship with the audiologist. Be sure to ask any and all questions. We want to be sure you are comfortable and understand your diagnosis so that you can be an active participant in finding hearing solutions that work best for you and your lifestyle.
